About

Surgical gastroenterologist with NIMS-trained tertiary care background

Dr. Nava Kishore is a Senior Consultant Surgical Gastroenterologist and HPB (Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary) Surgeon visiting Vivekananda Hospital, Begumpet. He holds an MBBS, MS in General Surgery, and an MCh in Surgical Gastroenterology, the formal three-year super-specialty qualification recognised by the National Medical Commission. Few private surgeons in Hyderabad have a formal MCh Surgical Gastroenterology, since most "GI surgeons" in the city are general surgeons who developed an interest area rather than completing the dedicated super-specialty pathway.

His MCh training was completed at Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), Hyderabad, the Telangana state government's tertiary care institute and one of the highest-volume GI surgery programmes in South India. NIMS handles complex referred cases from across the state, which means his operative exposure during training included disease severity rarely seen in private hospital settings. He is no longer on NIMS faculty and is now in independent private practice, with Vivekananda Hospital being one of the centres where he consults and operates.

His clinical focus is on advanced laparoscopic surgery for the digestive system. The principle is straightforward: where a problem can be safely fixed through 3-4 small incisions instead of one large open incision, the patient recovers faster with less pain, less scarring and shorter hospital stay. The most common procedures performed at Vivekananda Hospital include laparoscopic gallbladder removal, laparoscopic and open hernia repair with mesh, appendicectomy, and minimally invasive proctology for piles and fistula using stapler or laser techniques.

His sub-specialty interest is HPB surgery and gastrointestinal cancer surgery. At Vivekananda Hospital, this includes evaluation and surgery for liver abscess, hydatid cyst, liver trauma, simple bile duct surgery, and selected cases of stomach and colorectal cancer. Major HPB surgery such as Whipples procedure, major liver resection, or pancreatic cancer surgery requires tertiary-care anaesthesia, ICU and blood bank infrastructure that is typically reserved for higher centres, where he coordinates the surgery while maintaining continuity of pre and post-operative care for the patient.

Surgery should be a solution, not a burden. I am committed to ethical, evidence-based care where advanced laparoscopy meets patient comfort for a faster, safer recovery.

Patient Questions

Frequently asked questions

How do I book an appointment with Dr. Kishore?
Call +91 72079 04418 or WhatsApp the same number. Dr. Kishore consults at Vivekananda Hospital on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday between 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM. Slots fill up quickly because of his limited 3-day schedule. Booking 24 hours in advance is recommended for a confirmed slot. Walk-ins are accepted but may have longer waiting times.
What is the difference between a Medical Gastroenterologist and a Surgical Gastroenterologist?
A Medical Gastroenterologist treats digestive system conditions with medication, endoscopy and lifestyle interventions (such as acid reflux, IBS, IBD on medication, hepatitis, ulcers). A Surgical Gastroenterologist like Dr. Kishore is a qualified surgeon who performs operations on the digestive system, liver, pancreas and bile ducts. You should see a surgical gastroenterologist for conditions requiring physical intervention such as gallstones, hernias, appendicitis, piles, fistulas, GI cancers and HPB diseases.
What does the NIMS training mean for a patient?
Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) is the Telangana state government's tertiary care institute and one of South India's highest-volume training programmes for surgical gastroenterology. NIMS handles referred complex cases from across the state, which means a surgeon trained there has been exposed to disease severity and operative complexity that would take many years to encounter in private practice. Dr. Kishore completed his MCh at NIMS and is now in private practice, bringing this tertiary-care experience to Vivekananda Hospital patients.
Is he still on NIMS faculty?
No. Dr. Kishore completed his MCh training at NIMS and is now in independent private practice. Vivekananda Hospital is one of the centres where he consults and operates three days a week.
Dr. Kishore visits only 3 days. What if I have an emergency on other days?
Vivekananda Hospital has a 24/7 emergency department and on-duty medical team. If you have a GI emergency (severe abdominal pain, suspected appendicitis, acute cholecystitis, GI bleed) on a day Dr. Kishore is not visiting, the emergency team will assess and stabilise you immediately. For genuine surgical emergencies, the on-call general surgeon or another available consultant will manage. For non-emergency GI cases, an appointment can be scheduled for Dr. Kishore on his next OPD day.
I have been advised gallbladder surgery. Is laparoscopic safe?
Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal through 4 small incisions) is one of the most common and safest surgeries in modern surgical practice. It is the standard treatment for symptomatic gallstones causing pain, infection or other complications. Most patients are walking within hours of the surgery and discharged the next day. Recovery to routine activity is typically 7-10 days. Open surgery is reserved for cases where laparoscopy is not technically suitable, which Dr. Kishore evaluates pre-operatively based on imaging and your overall health.
Do you treat piles and fistula without open surgery?
Yes. Dr. Kishore performs minimally invasive proctology including stapler haemorrhoidectomy and laser treatment for piles. Compared to traditional open haemorrhoidectomy, these techniques cause significantly less post-operative pain, faster wound healing, and quicker return to work. For fistula in ano, sphincter-sparing techniques like LIFT (Ligation of Intersphincteric Fistula Tract) are preferred where suitable to preserve continence. Not every case is suitable for the minimally invasive approach, and Dr. Kishore discusses honest options based on the specific anatomy.
Does Dr. Kishore handle GI cancer cases?
Yes, for selected cases. He handles colon cancer surgery, low-complexity rectal cancer surgery, and selected stomach cancer cases at Vivekananda Hospital. For cancers requiring more complex resection, extensive lymph node clearance, or specialised reconstruction (such as Whipples procedure for pancreatic cancer or major liver resection), the surgery is performed at tertiary care centres with the dedicated anaesthesia, ICU and blood bank infrastructure these procedures require. Dr. Kishore continues to coordinate the patient's care across centres.
What is hernia repair with mesh?
A hernia occurs when an organ pushes through a weak point in the abdominal muscle wall (commonly inguinal in the groin, umbilical at the navel, or incisional at a previous surgery scar). Mesh repair uses a synthetic mesh patch to reinforce the muscle wall, dramatically reducing the chance of the hernia recurring. Dr. Kishore performs both laparoscopic mesh repair (smaller incisions, faster recovery) and open mesh repair (preferred for very large hernias or specific anatomical situations). The choice depends on the type, size and location of the hernia.
Is liver surgery performed at Vivekananda Hospital?
Selected liver surgery is performed at Vivekananda Hospital. This includes liver abscess drainage, hydatid cyst surgery, liver trauma management and simple bile duct surgery. Major liver resection (removing a large portion of the liver) and liver transplantation require dedicated transplant infrastructure and are referred to specialised centres. Dr. Kishore evaluates each case to determine the appropriate setting for surgery.
Do you accept insurance and Aarogyasri?
Yes. Vivekananda Hospital is empanelled with CGHS, ESI, Aarogyasri, Arogyabhadratha and 25+ private insurance providers for cashless treatment. GI surgeries including gallbladder removal, hernia repair, appendicectomy, piles surgery, fistula surgery and cancer surgeries are typically covered as medically necessary procedures. Bring your policy documents to the billing desk before your consultation to confirm specific cashless eligibility for your planned procedure.
