Cardiology Department at Vivekananda Hospital, Begumpet
Heart problems do not always announce themselves with chest pain. Sometimes it is breathlessness climbing two flights of stairs, or a heart rate that feels off at night, or a routine blood test that shows cholesterol levels your GP did not expect. Dr. S. Kalyan Chakravarthy runs the cardiology department here. He has 24 years of medical experience including over 10 years as a cardiology specialist with a DNB in Cardiology. We have 2D Echo and ECG machines in the hospital, so your cardiac workup happens on the same day as your consultation. No separate appointments, no external diagnostic centres.
Cardiology at Vivekananda Hospital
The Cardiology department at Vivekananda Hospital is a consultation, diagnosis, and medical management unit. We do not have a cath lab for angiography or stenting, and we are upfront about that. What we do have is a cardiologist who has been practising for over two decades, on-site 2D Echo and ECG machines, and the ability to evaluate, diagnose, and manage most heart conditions without the overhead costs of a large cardiac hospital. For patients who turn out to need interventional procedures like angioplasty or bypass, Dr. Kalyan Chakravarthy refers them to the right centre and continues their follow-up care here after the procedure.
Dr. S. Kalyan Chakravarthy has 24 years of medical experience with more than 10 years focused specifically on cardiology. He holds an MBBS, MD, and DNB in Cardiology. His daily practice involves evaluating patients with chest pain, breathlessness, palpitations, and uncontrolled blood pressure, performing 2D Echo to assess heart function, reading ECGs, and deciding the best course of treatment. A large portion of his work is also preventive: helping patients with diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol manage their cardiac risk before a heart attack actually happens.
He sees patients in two OPD slots every day, morning and evening, which is convenient for working professionals and elderly patients who prefer different times of the day. The department works closely with our Internal Medicine, Nephrology, and Endocrinology teams because heart disease rarely exists without diabetes, kidney issues, or metabolic problems tagging along.
Heart Conditions We Manage
Cardiology Services We Offer
Consultation and Clinical Assessment
Cardiology OPD Consultation
Dr. Kalyan Chakravarthy evaluates patients with chest pain, breathlessness, palpitations, leg swelling, dizziness, or any symptom that could be linked to the heart. He reviews your medical history, examines you, and decides whether you need an ECG, Echo, blood tests, or a combination. Most patients get a clear diagnosis and treatment plan in the first visit itself.
Cardiac Risk Assessment
If you are over 40, diabetic, hypertensive, have a family history of heart disease, or have high cholesterol, you carry a higher risk of a cardiac event. Dr. Kalyan assesses your overall risk through a combination of clinical evaluation, ECG, 2D Echo, and blood work, and puts together a prevention plan to reduce that risk before something happens.
Pre-Surgical Cardiac Fitness
Before any major surgery, the surgeon needs to know if your heart can handle anaesthesia and the stress of the operation. Dr. Kalyan provides cardiac clearance certificates for patients scheduled for orthopaedic, gynaecological, general surgery, or any other procedure. This includes ECG, Echo if needed, and a written fitness opinion.
Post-Heart Attack Follow-Up
Patients who have had a heart attack or undergone angioplasty or bypass surgery at another hospital need long-term follow-up. Dr. Kalyan manages medication adjustments, monitors heart function with periodic Echo, tracks recovery progress, and helps patients with lifestyle changes. You do not need to keep going back to the hospital where the procedure was done for every follow-up visit.
On-Site Cardiac Diagnostics
2D Echocardiography (2D Echo)
This is an ultrasound of your heart that shows how your heart chambers are shaped, how your valves are opening and closing, how strongly your heart is pumping, and whether there is any fluid around the heart. Dr. Kalyan Chakravarthy performs the Echo himself and explains the results to you on the spot. The test takes 15 to 20 minutes, is completely painless, and needs no preparation.
Electrocardiogram (ECG)
An ECG records the electrical activity of your heart and can detect irregular rhythms, signs of a previous heart attack, chamber enlargement, and other abnormalities. It takes about 5 minutes. Our ECG machine is available round the clock, including for patients who come through the emergency department at night or on weekends.
Blood Investigations
Our in-house lab handles all the blood work a cardiologist needs: lipid profile (total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, triglycerides), blood sugar (fasting and post-meal), HbA1c, kidney function tests, thyroid profile, and cardiac markers like Troponin in emergency situations. Results are typically available within a few hours.
Meet Your Cardiologist

Dr. S. Kalyan Chakravarthy
Dr. Kalyan Chakravarthy has been practising medicine for 24 years, with over 10 of those years spent specifically in cardiology. He completed his DNB in Cardiology, which is a national board certification that requires passing one of the toughest postgraduate examinations in the country. At Vivekananda Hospital, he runs the cardiology OPD twice a day (morning and evening), performs 2D Echo personally, and manages patients with everything from newly detected hypertension to complex heart failure. He is particularly experienced in managing cardiac risk in diabetic patients, which is relevant because Hyderabad has one of the highest diabetes prevalence rates in India, and most of those patients eventually develop some degree of heart involvement.
Why Choose Us for Heart Care
2D Echo and ECG Done On the Same Visit
At many hospitals, you consult the cardiologist on day one, then book an Echo at a diagnostic centre on day two, then come back to the doctor on day three. Here, Dr. Kalyan sees you, does the Echo himself in the same building, reads the ECG, and gives you a diagnosis and treatment plan in one visit. That saves you time, money, and the anxiety of waiting for results.
Two OPD Slots Every Day
Dr. Kalyan is available both in the morning (9:30 to 10:30 AM) and evening (4:30 to 5:30 PM), six days a week. This is twice the access most cardiologists at other hospitals offer. Working professionals can come in the evening, and elderly patients or those who need fasting blood work can come in the morning.
Honest About What We Can and Cannot Do
We do not have a cath lab and we do not pretend to be a cardiac surgery centre. What we offer is accurate diagnosis, proper medical management, and a cardiologist who will tell you clearly whether you need medicines or a procedure. If you need angioplasty or bypass, Dr. Kalyan refers you to the right centre with a full workup already done. You do not waste time or money repeating tests.
Post-Procedure Follow-Up Without Corporate Bills
After an angioplasty or bypass at a large hospital, you need years of follow-up visits, Echo monitoring, and medication adjustments. Doing all of that at the same corporate hospital adds up quickly. Dr. Kalyan manages post-procedure patients here at lower consultation costs, with the same quality of care and the convenience of a hospital that is 2 km from Ameerpet and 1.5 km from Somajiguda.
Works With Your Other Specialists
Heart disease usually comes with diabetes, kidney problems, or both. At Vivekananda Hospital, Dr. Kalyan coordinates with our Internal Medicine, Nephrology, and Endocrinology teams in the same building. Your cardiologist, diabetologist, and kidney specialist can all talk to each other without you carrying files between three different hospitals.
CGHS and Insurance Cashless
Cardiology consultations, 2D Echo, ECG, and blood tests are available on cashless basis for CGHS, ESI, Arogyabhadratha, and over 25 private insurance company beneficiaries. Heart checkup packages are also available for cash-paying patients at rates lower than standalone diagnostic centres.
