Nephrology and Dialysis Department at Vivekananda Hospital, Begumpet

Kidney problems do not always show symptoms until the damage is already done. That is why early detection and the right specialist matter. Dr. E. Praveen leads the nephrology department here. He trained in nephrology at SGPGIMS Lucknow, one of the top kidney care training programmes in the country, and has over 10 years of experience managing chronic kidney disease, acute kidney injury, dialysis, and transplant evaluation. We have an in-house dialysis unit for patients who need regular sessions, and we work with transplant centres for patients who need a kidney transplant.

Nephrology at Vivekananda Hospital

The Nephrology department at Vivekananda Hospital focuses on one thing: keeping your kidneys working for as long as possible, and managing the situation when they can not. A lot of kidney patients in Hyderabad get referred to a nephrologist only after the damage has reached an advanced stage. We see this regularly. By the time someone walks in with a creatinine of 5 or 6, the options have narrowed. Our goal is to catch problems early, slow down progression in CKD patients, and for those who do need dialysis, make sure they get it in a clean, well-monitored setting without having to travel across the city.

Dr. E. Praveen runs this department. He completed his DM in Nephrology from SGPGIMS Lucknow, which is widely regarded as one of the best nephrology training institutions in India. Before joining Vivekananda Hospital, he spent years working with kidney patients across different clinical settings, handling everything from straightforward electrolyte corrections to complex cases involving multiple organ failure. He manages chronic kidney disease at all stages, treats acute kidney injury in hospitalised patients, runs the dialysis unit, and does the full workup for patients being evaluated for kidney transplant.

The department coordinates closely with our Internal Medicine, Cardiology, and Endocrinology teams because kidney disease rarely exists in isolation. Most CKD patients also have diabetes, hypertension, or heart problems. Dr. Praveen works alongside these specialists to manage the whole patient, not just the kidneys. For patients who need a transplant, he handles the pre-transplant evaluation here, coordinates the surgery at a partner transplant centre, and then manages the post-transplant follow-up and immunosuppression at Vivekananda Hospital.

Kidney Disease Management

CKD Screening and Staging

If your blood tests show rising creatinine or dropping GFR, Dr. Praveen evaluates the cause, determines the stage of kidney disease, and puts together a plan to slow down the progression. The earlier this starts, the more kidney function you keep.

Diabetic Kidney Disease

Diabetes is the number one cause of kidney failure in India. If you have diabetes and your urine shows protein, or your creatinine is climbing, you need a nephrologist involved early. Dr. Praveen coordinates with our endocrinology and internal medicine teams to manage both the diabetes and the kidney damage together.

Hypertension and Kidney Care

High blood pressure damages kidneys, and damaged kidneys raise blood pressure further. It becomes a cycle. Dr. Praveen manages this by adjusting medications specifically to protect kidney function while controlling blood pressure. This is different from how a general physician manages hypertension.

Acute Kidney Injury (AKI)

When kidneys shut down suddenly due to infection, dehydration, medication reactions, or surgery complications, immediate intervention is needed. Dr. Praveen handles AKI cases in the ICU and ward, including emergency dialysis when the situation demands it.

Glomerulonephritis and Autoimmune Kidney Disease

These are conditions where the body's immune system attacks the kidneys. Diagnosis usually requires specific blood tests and sometimes a kidney biopsy. Dr. Praveen manages these with immunosuppressive medications tailored to the specific type of glomerular disease.

Kidney Stone Prevention

If you keep getting kidney stones despite surgical removal, the problem is metabolic, not surgical. Dr. Praveen identifies the type of stone through urine and blood analysis, finds the underlying metabolic cause, and prescribes a prevention strategy so stones do not keep coming back.

Dialysis Services

In-House Hemodialysis Unit

Our dialysis unit is inside the hospital building. Patients who need regular maintenance dialysis can get their sessions done here without traveling to a standalone dialysis centre. The unit runs under Dr. Praveen's supervision, with trained dialysis technicians and proper infection control protocols.

Emergency Dialysis

For patients admitted with acute kidney failure, severe electrolyte disturbances, or fluid overload that is not responding to medication, emergency dialysis is available. This is coordinated between the nephrology team and the ICU.

Dialysis Access Management

Getting the right dialysis access, whether it is an AV fistula, AV graft, or temporary catheter, makes a big difference to the quality of dialysis and the patient's comfort. Dr. Praveen evaluates each patient and coordinates with our surgical team for fistula creation when needed.

Kidney Transplant Evaluation

Pre-Transplant Workup

For patients with end-stage kidney disease who are being considered for transplant, we do the full evaluation here. This includes blood group testing, crossmatch, HLA typing, cardiac fitness assessment, infection screening, and donor workup. Once the patient is cleared, the transplant surgery is coordinated at a partner transplant centre.

Post-Transplant Follow-Up

After the transplant surgery, patients come back to Dr. Praveen for their ongoing care. This includes immunosuppression dose adjustments, graft function monitoring through regular blood tests, infection prevention, and managing any complications that come up in the months and years after transplant.

Vivekananda Hospital does not perform kidney transplant surgery on site. Dr. E. Praveen handles the full pre-transplant evaluation and post-transplant care here. The transplant procedure itself is done at a partner transplant centre. This way, patients get the convenience of doing their workup and follow-up close to home in Begumpet while the surgery happens at a centre with a dedicated transplant OT.

Why Choose Us for Kidney Care

SGPGIMS-Trained Nephrologist

Dr. Praveen trained at SGPGIMS Lucknow, which is consistently ranked among the top nephrology training centres in India. This is the same institution that trains nephrologists for AIIMS and other premier hospitals. You get that calibre of training right here in Begumpet.

Dialysis Unit Inside the Hospital

You do not need to go to a standalone dialysis centre. Our unit is in the same building where you consult your nephrologist, get your blood tests done, and see your other specialists. If anything goes wrong during a session, the full hospital is right there.

Early Morning OPD

Dr. Praveen's OPD is 7:30 AM to 8:30 AM, six days a week. Most kidney patients are working adults or elderly people who also need to see other doctors during the day. An early morning slot means you can get your nephrology consultation done before anything else and still make it to work or other appointments.

Coordinated Care Across Departments

Kidney disease almost always comes with diabetes, hypertension, or heart problems. At Vivekananda Hospital, Dr. Praveen works alongside our internal medicine, cardiology, and endocrinology teams in the same building. You do not need separate hospital visits for each specialist.

CGHS and Insurance Cashless

Dialysis is expensive over time. We are empanelled with CGHS, ESI, Arogyabhadratha, and over 25 private insurers. Regular dialysis patients can get their sessions covered on cashless basis, which removes a major financial burden for families dealing with kidney failure.

Transplant Evaluation Without the Corporate Bill

Pre-transplant workup at a corporate hospital in Hyderabad can cost significantly more just for the investigations. We do the entire evaluation here at lower costs, and only the actual surgery happens at the transplant centre. Post-transplant follow-up also happens here, so patients are not stuck paying corporate rates for years of ongoing care.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is the nephrologist at Vivekananda Hospital?
Dr. E. Praveen. He has MBBS from KMC, MD in General Medicine from Osmania Medical College, and DM in Nephrology from SGPGIMS Lucknow. He has over 10 years of experience treating kidney diseases. His OPD runs Monday to Saturday, 7:30 AM to 8:30 AM.
Does Vivekananda Hospital have a dialysis unit?
Yes. We have an in-house dialysis unit for both scheduled maintenance sessions and emergency dialysis. It runs under Dr. Praveen's supervision with trained dialysis technicians. You do not need to go to a separate dialysis centre.
Does the hospital do kidney transplant surgery?
No. Kidney transplant surgery is not done at Vivekananda Hospital. But Dr. Praveen handles the full pre-transplant workup (blood group, crossmatch, HLA typing, cardiac fitness, infection screening, donor evaluation) and all post-transplant follow-up care here. The actual surgery is coordinated at a partner transplant centre.
When should I see a nephrologist?
See a nephrologist if your blood tests show rising creatinine or dropping GFR, if your urine test shows protein or blood, if you have persistent swelling in your legs or face, if you have diabetes or hypertension that is difficult to control, if you keep getting kidney stones, or if your regular doctor has told you your kidneys are not functioning properly. The earlier you see a nephrologist, the more kidney function can be preserved.
What is the difference between a nephrologist and a urologist?
A nephrologist treats kidney diseases with medicines, manages dialysis, and evaluates patients for transplant. A urologist is a surgeon who operates on kidneys, bladder, and the urinary tract. If you have CKD, protein in urine, or need dialysis, you need a nephrologist. If you need surgery for kidney stones, tumours, or prostate issues, you need a urologist. Vivekananda Hospital has both departments, so you can be referred between them without changing hospitals.
What are the OPD timings?
Dr. E. Praveen is available Monday to Saturday, 7:30 AM to 8:30 AM. It is an early morning slot, so book a day in advance by calling +91 7207904418 or WhatsApp 7377 222 777 to avoid waiting.
Is dialysis covered under CGHS and insurance?
Yes. We are empanelled with CGHS, ESI, Arogyabhadratha, and over 25 private insurance companies. Regular dialysis sessions, nephrology consultations, and related investigations are available on cashless basis for eligible patients. Bring your insurance card and referral letter.
What qualifications does Dr. Praveen have?
MBBS from KMC, MD in General Medicine from Osmania Medical College (Hyderabad), and DM in Nephrology from Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) in Lucknow. SGPGIMS is one of the top nephrology training centres in India and trains specialists for institutions across the country.
Can kidney disease be reversed?
It depends on the type and stage. Acute kidney injury, if caught early and the cause is treated, can often be fully reversed. Chronic kidney disease in early stages (1-3) can be slowed down significantly with proper medication, diet control, and blood pressure management. Once CKD reaches stage 4 or 5, the focus shifts to slowing further decline and preparing for dialysis or transplant. The key is getting to a nephrologist as early as possible.
How do I book an appointment?
Call +91 7207904418 or WhatsApp 7377 222 777. You can also book through vivekanandahospital.in/book-an-appointment. Since the OPD is early morning, booking a day ahead is better than walking in.
