A hospital with a story, a purpose, and a promise
Behind every hospital is a reason for being. Vivekananda Hospital exists because Late Sri Dr. Vallurupalli Venkata Ratnam Garu, an ENT specialist trained in England, came home to Hyderabad with a clear purpose - to bring world-class medical care to the city he grew up in. In 1995, he opened the doors of Vivekananda Hospital in Begumpet, naming it after the philosopher whose teachings on selfless service guided his vision. Three decades later, that founding purpose still shapes how we practice medicine and how we treat the families who trust us with their health.
This page tells the complete Vivekananda Hospital story - our vision and mission, our founder's journey, the leadership that continues his legacy, the values that guide our daily work, the promises we make to every patient, the pillars that define us, and the multi-generational heritage we have built in Begumpet over three decades.
Our Vision
Our vision flows directly from the founder's belief that quality medical care should be available to every family - not just to those who can afford a corporate hospital, and not only to those who happen to live near a tertiary centre. Begumpet has been our home for three decades. Our vision is to remain the multispecialty hospital that families in this neighbourhood, and across central Hyderabad, turn to first - in routine illness, in serious diagnosis, and in emergency need.
Trust, in healthcare, is built slowly through consistent ethical practice. Our vision is shaped by what we have seen works over 30 years - clinical depth that is honest about its limits, pricing that is fair and transparent, consultations that take the time the patient deserves, and a culture where every member of staff understands that the patient is why we exist.
Our Mission
We deliver our mission through three concrete commitments. First, by maintaining a multi-specialty consultant team across 22 departments so families can receive coordinated care under one roof rather than navigating multiple hospitals. Second, by following evidence-based medical practice rather than chasing trends or making claims we cannot defend. Third, by building a hospital culture where patient dignity, family involvement, and ethical communication are non-negotiable expectations of every staff member.
Accessibility is at the heart of how we deliver this mission. Vivekananda Hospital is empanelled with CGHS, ESI, Aarogyasri, Arogyabhadratha, and 25+ private insurers - making cashless treatment available to patients across economic backgrounds. Our pricing is transparent. We do not offer what we cannot deliver in-house, and we honestly coordinate referral pathways for cases that need tertiary-level care elsewhere.
The Vision Behind Vivekananda Hospital
Vivekananda Hospital is the brainchild of the visionary Late Sri Dr. Vallurupalli Venkata Ratnam Garu. As an accomplished ENT Specialist who had practised in England for 12 years, Dr. Venkata Ratnam Garu returned to India with a clear understanding of what world-class healthcare infrastructure looked like - and an even clearer awareness of what Hyderabad of the 1990s lacked.
In 1995, he established Vivekananda Hospital with facilities that were, for their time, unparalleled in this part of the city. The choice of name was deliberate. Inspired by the principles of Swami Vivekananda - whose teachings on selfless service, dignity of every individual, and seeing the divine in every patient have guided the institution since day one. The hospital was inaugurated by Swami Ranganathananda of Ramakrishna Math, formally connecting Vivekananda Hospital to the Vedanta tradition of service to humanity.
Equally important to the founder were the guiding principles inspired by his late father, Sri Vallurupalli Nageswara Rao Garu, whose values of integrity and dedication to community shaped how Dr. Venkata Ratnam approached healthcare. These foundational principles of service and advancement continue to inspire our institution today.
Late Sri Dr. Vallurupalli Venkata Ratnam Garu
His legacy lives in every patient consultation, every operating theatre decision, every family interaction at Vivekananda Hospital. Three decades after he founded the institution, the values he instilled - clinical depth, ethical practice, accessible pricing, dignity in every interaction - remain the core of what we do.
Dr. Geetha Vallurupalli, Managing Director
Since joining the hospital in 1996, Dr. Geetha Vallurupalli (MBBS, DGO) has been an essential pillar supporting Vivekananda Hospital's growth and continuity. Her vast knowledge and ground-level experience across every department - from operations and reception through to operating theatres and direct medical care - have ensured the consistent delivery of quality services across the hospital. Her medical training as an obstetrician-gynaecologist (DGO qualification) gives her direct understanding of clinical practice and patient care delivery.
Taking over the responsibility as Managing Director in 2018, Dr. Geetha continues to lead Vivekananda Hospital into a new era - exploring digital transformation, expanding multispecialty capabilities, and modernising patient care - while steadfastly aligning every decision with the hospital's foundational ethics and core principles. Her two-decade continuity at the institution ensures that the founder's vision and culture remain intact even as the hospital evolves to meet contemporary healthcare needs.
Our Core Values
Seven values define how we practice medicine, treat patients, and run the hospital. These are not statements on a wall - they are tested in every clinical decision, every billing transaction, every interaction between staff and patient. When we fall short, we measure ourselves against these values and correct course.
Compassion
Every patient is treated with the warmth, patience, and care that we would want for our own family. Compassion is not a soft skill - it is fundamental to medical practice, particularly when patients are anxious, in pain, or facing difficult diagnoses.
Clinical Excellence
Evidence-based medical practice delivered by qualified consultants. We do not chase medical fads or make claims we cannot defend. Each consultant practises within his or her area of training, with multi-specialty coordination for complex cases.
Integrity
Honest communication about diagnosis, treatment options, prognosis, costs, and limits of what we can offer. Patients deserve the truth presented clearly, even when the truth is difficult. We do not over-promise, over-treat, or over-charge.
Accessibility
Healthcare should not be reserved for those who can afford corporate hospital pricing. CGHS, ESI, Aarogyasri, Arogyabhadratha, and 25+ private insurance empanelment ensure that families across economic backgrounds can access our services through cashless arrangements.
Continuity
Many of our patients today are the children and grandchildren of our earliest patients from 1995-96. Three-generational relationships matter to us. Continuity of care, continuity of doctors, continuity of values - this is what makes Vivekananda Hospital different from chain hospitals.
Service
The Vivekanandan principle of seeing the divine in every patient. Every staff member - consultant, nurse, technician, attendant, housekeeping - is here to serve. Hierarchy exists for clinical accountability, but service to the patient is everyone's responsibility.
Transparency
Open communication about what we offer in-house and what we coordinate elsewhere. Transparent published pricing where possible. Clear explanations of diagnosis, treatment, and bills. We respect the patient's right to make informed decisions about their own care.
What We Promise Our Patients
Values mean nothing without specific commitments. Here is what every patient at Vivekananda Hospital can expect from us, regardless of which department, which doctor, or which day of the week:
What is right for you, not what is profitable for us. If a less expensive treatment works equally well, we will tell you. If watchful waiting is appropriate, we will not push surgery.
Clear explanation of your diagnosis, the treatment options available, expected outcomes, risks, and recovery timeline. In a language you understand. With time for questions.
No hidden charges. No surprise bills. Insurance coverage verified before procedures. Out-of-pocket costs explained upfront. Itemised bills available on request.
Every department headed by a fully qualified specialist. No general practitioners practising specialty medicine. No untrained staff performing clinical procedures.
Complex cases reviewed across specialties. Internal referrals coordinated within the hospital. Shared medical records. Unified care planning. No fragmented care between departments.
We tell you what we can do in-house and what needs tertiary referral. We do not pretend to offer what we cannot deliver. We coordinate appropriate external referrals when needed.
Privacy in consultation. Family involvement when the patient wants it. Cultural and religious sensitivity. No judgement on lifestyle, background, or beliefs. Every patient treated with the same respect.
Round-the-clock casualty, ICU, 24/7 CT scan, immediate specialist availability for stroke, trauma, cardiac, obstetric, and paediatric emergencies. The emergency does not wait for OPD hours.
Five Pillars of Vivekananda Hospital
What defines us, distilled to five foundational pillars that every team member, every department, every decision is built around:
Founding Heritage
Three decades of continuous service since 1995, founded by an ENT specialist returning from England. Heritage is not nostalgia - it is institutional memory and accumulated trust.
Clinical Multi-Specialty
40+ consultants across 22 departments under one roof. Multi-specialty coordination is not a marketing line - it is daily clinical practice with shared records and unified planning.
Vivekanandan Service Ethos
The Swami Vivekananda principle of seeing the divine in every patient. Service is the foundation, not an extra. This shapes how every staff member thinks about their work.
Accessibility & Insurance
CGHS, ESI, Aarogyasri, Arogyabhadratha, and 25+ private insurer empanelment. Cashless treatment available. Healthcare reachable across economic backgrounds.
Ethical Practice & Transparency
Honest communication, transparent pricing, scope honesty, and qualified specialists. Practising medicine the way patients deserve - and the way our founder envisioned.
Three Decades, Three Generations
Vivekananda Hospital opened its doors in 1995. Many of our patients today are the children and grandchildren of our earliest patients. The family who brought their newborn here in 1996 now brings that same child, now a grown adult, for their own prenatal care. The grandfather treated for ENT issues by Dr. Venkata Ratnam in the late 1990s now sees us with his grandchildren when they need a paediatrician.
This multi-generational continuity is not common in healthcare. Most hospitals - particularly chain hospitals - see patients as transactions. We see patients as families, often across decades. This shapes how we communicate, how we keep records, how we follow up, and how we make decisions about long-term care planning.
"We are Begumpet's neighbourhood hospital. The patient who walked in for a routine consultation in 1995 may today bring her grandchild for paediatric care. That continuity is the heart of who we are."
Continuity is not just about our patients - it is also about our team. Several of our consultants have been with Vivekananda Hospital for over 15 years. The Managing Director, Dr. Geetha Vallurupalli, has been at the hospital since 1996. This institutional memory means that when complex cases arise, decisions are informed by decades of experience with patients, the community, and clinical practice.
