About

MCh Urologist for stones, prostate, cancer and men's health

Dr. Surya Prakash B is a Visiting Consultant Urologist and Andrologist at Vivekananda Hospital, Begumpet. He holds an MBBS, MS General Surgery, and MCh Urology - the complete super-specialty pathway that is mandatory for urology practice in India. With 30+ years of overall medical practice and 25+ years as a specialist urologist, his clinical focus spans uro-oncology, endourology, laparoscopic urology and men's health.

His practice at Vivekananda covers the full range of common urological presentations. Kidney stones remain the highest-volume condition in Hyderabad's urology practice. He performs endourology procedures including Ureteroscopy (URS), Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery (RIRS) and Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL), selecting the approach based on stone size, location and kidney anatomy. Most modern stone procedures are minimally invasive, done through natural passages or small punctures, with hospital stay of 1-3 days.

Uro-oncology forms a significant part of his specialist practice. Cancers of the kidney, bladder, prostate and testis each have distinct surgical and medical management pathways. His role includes accurate staging, discussion of treatment options (surgery, chemotherapy, radiation coordination), laparoscopic and open cancer surgery where suitable, and long-term oncological follow-up. Early-stage urological cancers often have excellent outcomes when diagnosed and treated promptly.

Andrology covers male reproductive and sexual health. Conditions managed include male infertility evaluation (semen analysis, hormonal workup, varicocele assessment), erectile dysfunction (investigation and treatment), low testosterone management, and surgical correction of conditions like hydrocele and varicocele. This is a sub-specialty that many men avoid discussing; a structured clinical approach usually identifies manageable causes.

Urology is one of those specialties where early evaluation changes outcomes dramatically. A kidney stone picked up small can be dissolved or flushed out. A prostate change picked up early has many more treatment options. A male infertility concern addressed methodically has better chances of resolution. Delays rarely help; timely clinical action does.

Frequently asked questions

How do I book an appointment with Dr. Surya Prakash B?
Call +91 72079 04418 or WhatsApp the same number. Dr. Surya Prakash B visits on an alternating pattern - Mon/Wed/Fri or Tue/Thu/Sat evening 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Always call before coming to confirm the exact day he will be available that particular week.
What is MCh Urology and why does it matter?
MCh Urology is a 3-year super-specialty training programme after MS General Surgery, and it is mandatory for any doctor to legally practice as a urologist in India. This training covers endoscopic procedures, laparoscopic urology, open urological surgery, oncology, andrology and paediatric urology. Always confirm your urologist has MCh Urology or DNB Urology qualification.
Which kidney stone procedure is right for me?
It depends on stone size, location and kidney anatomy. Small ureteric stones may pass with hydration and medication. Medium-sized stones are treated with Ureteroscopy (URS) or shock wave lithotripsy. Larger kidney stones usually need Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL) or Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery (RIRS). The decision is made after CT KUB imaging and clinical assessment.
I have raised PSA. Does it mean I have prostate cancer?
Not necessarily. PSA can be raised due to benign prostatic enlargement, prostate infection, recent catheterisation, or prostate cancer. A single raised PSA needs careful interpretation with clinical examination, repeat testing, and sometimes MRI prostate before deciding on biopsy. Many men with mildly raised PSA have benign causes. Structured evaluation avoids both missed cancers and unnecessary biopsies.
What is the difference between URS, PCNL, and RIRS?
URS (Ureteroscopy) uses a thin scope through the natural urinary passage to remove ureteric stones. RIRS (Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery) uses a flexible scope to reach kidney stones through the natural passage. PCNL (Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy) is for larger kidney stones and uses a small puncture in the back to directly access the kidney. Selection depends on stone size and location.
Can he help with male infertility?
Yes. Andrology is a core part of MCh Urology training. Male infertility evaluation includes detailed history, physical examination, semen analysis interpretation, hormonal workup (FSH, LH, testosterone, prolactin), and scrotal ultrasound where indicated. Causes range from varicocele to hormonal imbalance to obstruction. Many identified causes are treatable, either medically or surgically.
What is urinary incontinence and can it be treated?
Urinary incontinence is involuntary leakage of urine, ranging from occasional drops during coughing to full bladder loss. Stress incontinence (with cough, sneeze, laugh) is common in women after childbirth or in men after prostate surgery. Urge incontinence (sudden desperate need) is usually due to bladder overactivity. Both respond to pelvic floor exercises, medications, and in selected cases surgical procedures like sling placement.
Does he treat children's urological problems?
Yes. Paediatric urology is covered in MCh Urology training. Common paediatric presentations include congenital anomalies of the urinary tract, undescended testes, bedwetting beyond normal age, urinary tract infections, and paediatric kidney stones. Many paediatric urology conditions are best addressed early to prevent long-term kidney damage.
How long is hospital stay for common urology procedures?
Most endourology procedures (URS, RIRS) are 1-2 day admissions with same-day or next-day discharge. PCNL typically needs 2-3 day admission. TURP for prostate is usually 2-3 days. Laparoscopic urology procedures (kidney tumour, laparoscopic stone surgery) generally need 3-5 days. Open surgery stays vary based on the specific procedure.
Are urology procedures covered by insurance?
Yes for most medically indicated procedures. Vivekananda Hospital is empanelled with CGHS, ESI, Aarogyasri, Arogyabhadratha and 25+ private insurers. Stone surgery, TURP, cancer surgery, male infertility surgery, and paediatric urology procedures are typically covered. Elective cosmetic procedures and some andrology investigations may not be covered. Bring policy documents for cashless eligibility confirmation.
