Patient FAQs: Digestive & Liver Health

1. When should I see a gastroenterologist instead of a general physician?
You should consult a gastroenterologist if you experience persistent symptoms like severe heartburn, unexplained weight loss, chronic diarrhea or constipation, severe abdominal pain, difficulty swallowing, or if you notice blood in your stool. These can be early signs of serious digestive or liver conditions.
2. What is the difference between Medical and Surgical Gastroenterology?
Medical Gastroenterology focuses on diagnosing and treating digestive issues (like IBS, ulcers, and hepatitis) using medication, diet changes, and endoscopic procedures. Surgical Gastroenterology involves operative interventions (like removing gallbladder stones, treating hernias, or performing complex cancer surgeries) when medical management is not enough.
3. Are endoscopy and colonoscopy painful procedures?
No, they are not painful. These diagnostic procedures are typically performed under conscious sedation or mild anesthesia. You will be completely relaxed, comfortable, and pain-free throughout the process, and most patients have no memory of the procedure itself.
4. How do I know if I have gallstones?
The most common symptom of gallstones is a sudden, intense pain in the upper right part of your abdomen. The pain may spread to your right shoulder or back, and is often accompanied by nausea or vomiting, especially after eating a heavy or fatty meal.
5. Can acid reflux or GERD be cured permanently?
While occasional heartburn is normal, chronic GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) can severely damage your esophagus. It can often be managed effectively with dietary changes and medication. For severe cases that do not respond to medicine, minimally invasive anti-reflux surgery (like a fundoplication) can offer a permanent cure.
6. What are the early warning signs of liver disease?
Early liver disease often has no symptoms. As it progresses, warning signs include jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), chronic fatigue, abdominal swelling, dark urine, and pale stool. Early screening is highly recommended if you consume alcohol regularly or have diabetes.
7. Why would I need an Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS)?
EUS is a highly advanced diagnostic tool that combines an endoscope with ultrasound waves. It provides incredibly detailed images of your digestive tract and surrounding organs (like the pancreas, liver, and lymph nodes), allowing our specialists to accurately stage GI cancers and detect tumors much earlier than a standard MRI or CT scan.
8. Is fatty liver disease dangerous?
Yes. If left untreated, fatty liver disease can progress to inflammation, liver scarring (cirrhosis), and eventually liver failure or cancer. However, if diagnosed early by a hepatologist, it is highly reversible through targeted diet, exercise, and medical management.
9. How long does it take to recover from gallbladder removal surgery?
At Vivekananda Hospital, we specialize in Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy (keyhole surgery) for gallbladder removal. Because the incisions are tiny, most patients are discharged the very same day and can return to light desk work within 3 to 5 days. Full recovery usually takes about 1 to 2 weeks.
10. Do you accept cashless health insurance for gastro surgeries?
Yes. We maintain a dedicated insurance desk providing rapid cashless approvals. We are fully empanelled with major TPAs, Star Health, HDFC Ergo, ICICI Lombard, and government schemes like CGHS and EHS. For out-of-pocket expenses, we offer 0% Cost EMI options.
