Orthopaedics Department at Vivekananda Hospital, Begumpet
A knee that hurts every time you climb stairs, a shoulder that will not lift past a certain point, a fracture from a road accident at midnight, a torn ligament from a cricket match that ended badly. These are the problems that bring people to an orthopaedic surgeon, and the outcome depends almost entirely on who operates and how well they were trained. At Vivekananda Hospital, this department has two orthopaedic surgeons with very different strengths. Dr. Krishna Y has been practising orthopaedics for over 60 years. Dr. Shiv Sandeep brings the modern side: he did three separate fellowships in joint replacement (Sunshine Hospital), computer-navigated joint replacement (Max Hospital Delhi), and arthroscopy and sports medicine (Fortis Hospital). Between the two, you get six decades of pattern recognition and the latest surgical techniques under one roof. The hospital handles knee and hip replacement, ACL reconstruction, rotator cuff repair, fracture fixation, spine surgery, and 24/7 trauma care.

Orthopaedics at Vivekananda Hospital
Orthopaedics covers everything related to bones, joints, muscles, ligaments, and tendons. That ranges from a simple wrist fracture to a total knee replacement, from a sprained ankle to an ACL tear that needs reconstruction, from chronic back pain to a spinal disc that needs surgery. The department at Vivekananda Hospital handles all of it, and the reason it handles it well comes down to the two surgeons running it.
Dr. Krishna Y has been an orthopaedic surgeon for over 60 years. That is not a misprint. He started practising orthopaedics before most hospitals in Hyderabad were built. His experience in fracture management, deformity correction, and complex trauma cases is the kind that comes from treating tens of thousands of patients over a career that spans more than half a century. He sees patients every morning and remains actively involved in the department's surgical decisions.
Dr. Shiv Sandeep represents the other end of the spectrum. He finished his MBBS and MS in Orthopaedics from NTR University, then went and did three fellowships back to back. The first was in Arthroplasty (joint replacement) at Sunshine Hospital, Hyderabad. The second was in Computer Navigation for Joint Replacement at Max Hospital, Delhi. The third was in Arthroscopy and Sports Medicine at Fortis Hospital. Three fellowships from three different institutions means he trained under three different surgical schools and brought back different perspectives on how to approach the same problem. He has 15 years of overall experience and 12 years as a specialist, and his focus areas are knee and hip replacement, ACL reconstruction, meniscus repair, rotator cuff surgery, and sports injury management.
The hospital has a physiotherapy department in the same building, which matters because orthopaedic recovery is half surgery and half rehabilitation. A knee replacement without proper physiotherapy gives a poor result. A shoulder surgery without range-of-motion exercises leads to stiffness. Having the physio team and the surgeon under the same roof means the recovery programme is planned together and the patient does not need to go to a separate rehab centre. For emergency trauma cases, the hospital runs a 24/7 emergency department with X-ray and CT scan available at any hour, and the orthopaedic surgeon is on call for fracture fixation and trauma surgery.

Joint Replacement Surgery
Total Knee Replacement (TKR)
When knee arthritis has reached the point where painkillers, injections, and physiotherapy no longer help, total knee replacement gives the patient a new bearing surface that eliminates bone-on-bone grinding. Dr. Shiv Sandeep trained in this procedure at Sunshine Hospital and also learned computer navigation for more precise implant alignment at Max Hospital Delhi. Most patients walk with support within 24 hours of surgery and go home in 3 to 5 days.
Total Hip Replacement
Severe hip arthritis, avascular necrosis (where the ball of the hip joint loses blood supply and collapses), and certain hip fractures in elderly patients are treated with total hip replacement. The worn-out joint is replaced with a metal and plastic implant. Dr. Shiv Sandeep's arthroplasty fellowship covered both knee and hip replacement.
Revision Joint Replacement
When a previously implanted knee or hip has worn out, loosened, or become infected, revision surgery removes the old implant and puts in a new one. This is technically more difficult than a first-time replacement because there is bone loss and scar tissue from the earlier surgery. Both surgeons handle revision cases.
Partial Knee Replacement
If arthritis affects only one compartment of the knee (usually the inner side), a partial knee replacement replaces just that section while keeping the healthy parts intact. Recovery is faster, the knee feels more natural, and more bone is preserved compared to a total replacement. Not every patient is a candidate, so the decision is based on X-ray and clinical assessment.
Arthroscopy and Sports Medicine
ACL Reconstruction
A torn ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) causes the knee to give way during activity. Arthroscopic ACL reconstruction uses a tendon graft to rebuild the ligament through keyhole incisions. Dr. Shiv Sandeep's fellowship in arthroscopy and sports medicine at Fortis Hospital covered this procedure extensively. Recovery takes about 6 to 9 months with structured physiotherapy.
Meniscus Repair and Surgery
A torn meniscus causes knee pain, swelling, locking, and clicking. Small tears may heal with rest and physio, but larger tears need arthroscopic surgery. The torn portion is either repaired (stitched) or trimmed (partial meniscectomy) depending on the location and type of tear. The entire procedure is done through two small holes in the knee.
Rotator Cuff Repair
A torn rotator cuff tendon in the shoulder causes pain when lifting the arm and weakness in overhead movements. Arthroscopic repair reattaches the torn tendon to the bone using suture anchors. Recovery requires several weeks of protected movement followed by progressive strengthening under the physiotherapy team's guidance.
PRP and Joint Injections
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) injections use the patient's own blood components to promote healing in damaged tendons, ligaments, and cartilage. Viscosupplementation (hyaluronic acid) injections into arthritic knees provide lubrication and pain relief. These are non-surgical options that can delay or avoid surgery in early to moderate cases.
Fracture Surgery and Trauma
Fracture Fixation (Plating, Nailing, External Fixation)
Displaced fractures that will not heal properly with a plaster cast need surgical fixation. Depending on the fracture location and pattern, this is done with metal plates and screws, intramedullary nails (rods inserted inside the bone), or external fixators for complex open fractures. The hospital's 24/7 emergency department and OT allow fracture surgery at any hour.
Hip Fracture Surgery in Elderly
Hip fractures in older patients are serious injuries that need surgery within 24 to 48 hours to prevent complications from prolonged bed rest. Depending on the fracture type, treatment is either internal fixation with screws or partial/total hip replacement. Dr. Krishna Y has managed thousands of hip fractures over his career, and the hospital's ICU and internal medicine team provide the medical backup elderly patients often need.
Non-Union and Deformity Correction
Fractures that fail to heal (non-union) or heal in the wrong position (malunion) need corrective surgery. This may involve bone grafting, re-breaking and re-fixing the bone, or using external fixators to gradually correct the alignment. Dr. Krishna Y's six decades of experience include extensive work with complex non-unions and limb deformities.
Spine Surgery
Disc Surgery (Discectomy)
A herniated disc pressing on a nerve causes shooting pain down the leg (sciatica) or arm. When physiotherapy and medication do not work after 6 to 8 weeks, surgical removal of the disc fragment relieves the nerve pressure. The orthopaedic team coordinates with the neurosurgery department for complex spinal cases.
Spinal Fixation and Fusion
Spinal fractures, spondylolisthesis (slipped vertebra), and unstable spine segments are treated with screws, rods, and bone grafting to stabilise the spine. This prevents further nerve damage and allows the patient to mobilise safely. Post-operative rehabilitation is managed with the physiotherapy department.
Meet Your Orthopaedic Surgeons

Dr. Krishna Y
Dr. Krishna Y has been practising orthopaedics for over 60 years. There is no way to overstate what that means in terms of case volume. He has managed fractures, joint problems, and bone conditions across six decades of practice in Hyderabad. His particular depth is in complex fracture management, deformity correction, non-union treatment, and trauma surgery. When a fracture does not look like the textbook picture, or when a previous surgery has failed and the bone has not healed, his experience in reading the situation and choosing the right approach is what makes the difference. He continues to see patients every morning and actively participates in surgical planning and decision-making for the department.

Dr. Shiv Sandeep
Dr. Shiv Sandeep is the Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Vivekananda Hospital with 15 years of overall experience and 12 years as a specialist. What sets him apart is the breadth of his post-MS training. After finishing his MS in Orthopaedics, he did a fellowship in joint replacement at Sunshine Hospital where he learned the techniques for knee and hip replacement surgery. He then went to Max Hospital in Delhi for a fellowship in computer-navigated joint replacement, which uses technology to align the implant more precisely during surgery. His third fellowship was in arthroscopy and sports medicine at Fortis Hospital, where he trained in ACL reconstruction, meniscus repair, rotator cuff surgery, and other keyhole joint procedures. Three fellowships from three different hospital systems gave him exposure to different approaches and surgical philosophies, and he brings all of that to his practice at Vivekananda Hospital.
Why Choose Us for Orthopaedic Care
Triple-Fellowship Joint Replacement and Arthroscopy Surgeon
Dr. Shiv Sandeep did not stop at one fellowship. He trained at Sunshine for arthroplasty, Max Delhi for computer-navigated replacement, and Fortis for arthroscopy and sports medicine. That is three different institutions, three different surgical mentors, and three different perspectives. For patients who need a joint replacement or a ligament repair, this breadth of training matters.
60 Years of Orthopaedic Experience
Dr. Krishna Y has been treating bone and joint problems since the 1960s. For fractures that have not healed despite previous surgery, deformities that need correction, and unusual cases that do not fit a standard protocol, his experience is the department's greatest asset. There is no substitute for having seen it all.
Morning and Evening OPD Coverage
Dr. Krishna Y is available 11:30 AM to 1 PM. Dr. Shiv Sandeep is available 5 to 7 PM. That means there is an orthopaedic surgeon available in both halves of the day, six days a week. Working professionals can come in the evening, elderly patients can come in the morning, and trauma cases are handled 24/7 through the emergency department.
Physiotherapy Department in the Same Building
Orthopaedic surgery without proper rehabilitation gives incomplete results. Our physiotherapy department starts rehab during the hospital stay and continues it after discharge. The surgeon and physiotherapist communicate directly, which means the rehab programme is adjusted based on how the surgery went and how the patient is recovering.
24/7 Trauma with CT Scan and OT
Fractures from road accidents, falls, and workplace injuries do not wait for morning OPD. The emergency department, X-ray, CT scan, and operation theatre all run round the clock. A patient with a hip fracture who arrives at midnight can be in the OT by early morning, which is the standard of care for hip fracture surgery in the elderly.
CGHS and Insurance Cashless
Joint replacement, fracture surgery, arthroscopy, spine surgery, and orthopaedic consultations are available on cashless basis for CGHS, ESI, Arogyabhadratha, and over 25 private insurance companies. Joint replacement in particular is a procedure where insurance coverage makes a significant difference to the family's financial burden.
