What long hours at the wheel do

The problems ten hours of driving causes

These are the complaints we hear most from drivers. None of them are your fault, they come with sitting and driving all day. All of them are treatable, and cheaper to fix early.

Back pain and sciaticaFrom long hours seated and road vibration, often shooting down one leg.
Weight, heart and sugarLong sitting, stress and irregular meals push up weight, blood pressure and blood sugar.
Eye strain and night visionLong shifts and headlight glare tire the eyes and dull night vision.
Poor and broken sleepLong or night shifts disturb sleep, which affects mood, weight and pressure.
Piles and urine problemsFrom long sitting, holding urine and drinking too little through a shift.
Knee and leg strainFrom the clutch and pedals, felt most by auto drivers on long days.

You do not have to live with it or live on painkillers. Get a basic check once a year even when you feel fine, because the ones that hurt drivers most, high blood pressure, high blood sugar and heart trouble, build up silently for years before they show.

Small things that help

Simple habits that protect a driver's body

General guidance, not a treatment plan. If pain or tiredness is persistent or getting worse, see a doctor rather than ignoring it.

Get out and walk for two minutes every hour or two. Do it at a stand or between rides. It resets your back and lowers the risk of clots from long sitting.
Set your seat and use a lower-back cushion. Knees level with hips, back supported. A small cushion prevents years of slow damage.
Drink water and do not hold urine. Carry a bottle. This is the simplest way to avoid stones, urine infections and worsening piles.
Get one basic health check a year. Blood pressure, blood sugar, weight and eyesight. The free camp at your stand takes ten minutes and catches the silent problems early.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What health problems are common in cab and auto drivers?

Long hours sitting cause a predictable set of problems: lower back pain and sciatica, weight gain and the heart and blood sugar risks that come with it, piles from long sitting, weaker night vision and eye strain, poor and broken sleep from long or night shifts, and leg and knee strain from the clutch and pedals, worse for auto drivers. High blood pressure and high blood sugar are very common and cause no symptoms until they turn serious, so a yearly check matters even when you feel fine.

Do you offer free health checks for drivers?

Yes. We run free health camps at cab hubs, auto stands and driver union points, at a time that suits your shift. We check blood pressure, blood sugar, weight, eyesight, back and posture, and hearing in about ten minutes per driver, at no charge. If anything looks off, we call you within two days to explain it. Ask your union or hub to arrange one, or message us directly.

I sit and drive all day and my back hurts. What can I do?

Lower back pain and sciatica are the most common complaints we hear from drivers. It helps to set your seat so your knees are level with your hips, use a small cushion for lower-back support, get out and walk for a couple of minutes every hour or two, and keep your weight in check because extra weight worsens back load. Do not ignore pain that shoots down a leg or comes with numbness or weakness. If it is persistent, see a doctor rather than living on painkillers, because physiotherapy and early treatment work far better than waiting.

Is night driving bad for my eyes and health?

Night and long shifts strain your eyes, especially with oncoming headlight glare, and broken sleep affects your blood pressure, weight and concentration over time. Get your eyesight checked at least yearly, keep your windscreen and glasses clean, and try to protect a regular sleep block even on a shifting schedule. Constant tiredness, snoring with daytime sleepiness, or dozing at signals are worth telling a doctor about, as they can point to a treatable sleep problem.

How do I register and what does it cost?

Registration is free. There is no card to buy, no joining fee and no monthly payment. Call or WhatsApp 7207904418, or register at a camp at your stand or hub. Once registered you get a free first consultation, agreed prices in writing before any planned treatment, free accident insurance claim help, and access to the free camps. Your immediate family is covered by the same registration.

What should I do if I have an accident while driving?

Call 7207904418 and come straight to our casualty on Greenlands Road, Begumpet. Treatment starts first and the paperwork is handled after you are stable. We have a 24 hour casualty, ICU, and an orthopaedic surgeon on call for fractures. We also file your accident insurance claim for you, including any cover under the vehicle policy. See our road accident and emergency care page for the full details.

Which companies is this for?

All of them, and none of them exclusively. This is open to any cab or auto driver in Hyderabad, whether you drive with a platform such as Ola, Uber or Rapido, or independently. Vivekananda Hospital is an independent hospital and is not connected to or endorsed by any platform company. Where platforms are named, it is only to describe the work our patients do.

How often should a driver get a health check?

At least once a year, even when you feel completely fine. Drivers carry a higher risk of high blood pressure, high blood sugar and heart problems because of long sitting, stress and irregular meals, and all three are silent until they turn serious. A basic yearly check of blood pressure, blood sugar, weight and eyesight catches these early, when they are easy to manage. The free camps at your stand or hub exist for exactly this.
