Frequently Asked Questions (Patient Guide)

1. What is the difference between General Surgery and Laparoscopic Surgery?
General surgery traditionally involved "open" procedures with large incisions and longer recovery times. Laparoscopic surgery (keyhole surgery) is an advanced, minimally invasive technique. Our surgeons insert a high-definition camera and micro-instruments through tiny 0.5cm to 1cm cuts. This results in significantly less pain, virtually invisible scars, and much faster recovery.
2. Is laparoscopic surgery safe?
Yes. Laparoscopic surgery is considered the global gold standard for procedures like gallbladder removal, appendectomies, and hernia repairs. With 4K magnification, surgeons actually have a clearer view of internal organs than in open surgery. At Vivekananda Hospital, our 0% infection Laminar Airflow OTs make it exceptionally safe.
3. How long will I need to stay in the hospital after a procedure?
For most laparoscopic procedures (like gallbladder removal or hernia repair) and laser proctology (piles), we offer "Day-Care Surgery" or same-day discharge. You are typically admitted in the morning and walk out by the evening. Complex GI surgeries or trauma cases may require a 2 to 3-day stay.
4. Do you accept cashless health insurance and offer EMI options?
Yes. We maintain a dedicated insurance desk providing 3-hour fast-track cashless approvals. We are fully empanelled with major TPAs, Star Health, HDFC Ergo, ICICI Lombard, and government schemes like CGHS and EHS. For cash-paying patients, we offer 0% Cost EMI options through GMoney and Bajaj Finserv.
5. How soon can I return to work after keyhole surgery?
Because laparoscopic surgery does not cut through major abdominal muscles, recovery is rapid. Most patients can return to light desk work and normal walking within 3 to 5 days. Heavy lifting or strenuous exercise should be avoided for 4 to 6 weeks.
6. Is laser surgery actually painless for Piles, Fissures, and Fistulas?
Compared to traditional open surgery, Advanced Laser Proctology is virtually painless. It is a stitchless, zero-cutting procedure that uses laser energy to shrink the tissue or seal the tract. This minimizes bleeding, heavily reduces post-operative pain, and allows you to resume normal bathroom habits immediately.
7. Are mesh implants safe for hernia repair?
Yes. We utilize premium, bio-compatible 3D surgical mesh for all our hernia reconstructions. The mesh acts as a scaffold, reinforcing the weakened abdominal wall and allowing your body's natural tissue to grow into it. This technique guarantees near-zero recurrence rates.
8. Will I have large, visible scars after the operation?
No. If you undergo laparoscopic surgery, the incisions are roughly the size of a grain of rice. One is typically hidden completely inside your belly button, and the others fade into faint, unnoticeable lines within a few months, offering a massive cosmetic advantage.
9. What should I eat before and after a general surgery procedure?
Strict fasting (no food or water) is required for 8 hours prior to any surgery requiring general anesthesia. Post-surgery, you will start with a clear liquid diet and gradually transition to soft foods within 24 hours. Specific long-term dietary guidelines will be provided by our surgeons based on your specific procedure.
10. Do I need an appointment, or can I come directly for emergency surgery?
For elective surgeries (like a planned hernia repair or consultation), we recommend booking an appointment to minimize your wait time. However, for acute emergencies (like severe appendicitis, sudden gallbladder attacks, or trauma), please come directly to our 24/7 casualty department in Begumpet for immediate life-saving intervention.
