Common Questions

Which type of hernia surgery is better - open or laparoscopic?
Laparoscopic repair offers faster recovery (3-5 days vs 2-3 weeks), less pain, minimal scarring, and lower recurrence rates. However, open surgery is more affordable and may be recommended for very large or complex hernias. Dr. Deeraj Jaliwar assesses your specific case and recommends the best approach during consultation.
Is hernia surgery covered under cashless insurance?
Yes. Hernia repair is classified as a medically necessary surgery and is covered by virtually all health insurance policies. We offer cashless facility with CGHS, ESI, HDFC Ergo, ICICI Lombard, Bajaj Allianz, Niva Bupa, Aditya Birla, and 15+ other insurers. Our insurance desk handles all pre-authorization paperwork.
What happens if I don't get hernia surgery?
Hernias do not heal on their own and tend to enlarge over time. A small, painless hernia today can become large, painful, and even dangerous. The two serious risks are incarceration (hernia gets stuck and cannot be pushed back) and strangulation (blood supply gets cut off), which requires emergency surgery. Planned surgery is always safer and more affordable than emergency surgery.
How soon can I return to work after laparoscopic hernia surgery?
Most patients return to desk work within 3-5 days after laparoscopic repair. Avoid heavy lifting (above 5-10 kg) for 4 weeks. Full activities including exercise resume by week 4. Open surgery recovery takes 2-3 weeks for desk work and 6-8 weeks for heavy activities.
Can a hernia be treated with a belt or truss instead of surgery?
Hernia belts and trusses can temporarily hold the hernia in place and provide relief, but they do not fix the underlying defect in the abdominal wall. They are not a long-term solution. Surgery is the only permanent treatment for a hernia. Delaying surgery while using a belt risks the hernia becoming larger or developing complications.
